The Meadowport Arch was the first source of inspiration for me to want to paint in Prospect Park, in Brooklyn, NY.It is an old
limestone archway with vehicle
and pedestrian traffic on top and it’s inside is lined with cedar. The Meadowport Arch is also notable
for its two entryways.
I set out early on this hot summer’s morning. The park was quiet and the trees were starting to wilt in the heat adding strength to the organic feel of the arch. The blue hues in the shadows gave them a mysterious sense of depth.

What a beautiful day to go out and paint plein air. It was a warm day but I was painting from the shadows in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY.
I felt like I was staring into a secret spot; Endale Arch provided me with many challenges to overcome. The study in greens from foreground to backgrounds , the texture and subtlety of the wooden guardrail and the stone archway kept my interest peaked. The pops of color from the dappled sunlight were an added bonus.

Officially named The Cleft Ridge Span, all who pass through seem giddy at its powerful echo, possibly on their way to the 100 year old Prospect Park Carousel.
I arrived late in the afternoon and was pleasantly surprised with the clarity and intensity of light and color stretching from the footpath through the arch and into the park.

I love to take walks in the rain. That being said when I was painting this familiar scene in a different atmosphere than I had painted it before, I was surprised as passers by would comment on my dedication or commitment to be painting “under these conditions”. I would smile and say that I love to paint when it’s so quiet, just me and nature.

During the painting of Dog Beach my eyes kept going back to a space in the woods, just to the left of a small orange leaved tree. The next day I worked my way into that space with my easel and was pleasantly surprised a the vista before me.
The rolling landscape in the background a tree clustered middle ground, full of color with leaves beginning to fall. Unlike Dog Beach Autumn, the sky on this day was cloudless and the only movement in this scene was provided by a current in the water.
