This was the most fun I’ve had painting a building. The sunset on the copper, the trumpeting angel, the arches and their shadows and the clear blue sky changing to a deeper shade.

Sunrise on the Montauk

I set out to paint the Montauk Club in Brooklyn, New York,one cold dark morning in late September. I needed time to set up my easel and palette before the sun came up.
The sun came up and instead of a warmth emanating from the buildings terra cotta colored stone I was surprised at the blinding brightness of the scene.
My wife and I were married here shortly after I finished this piece.

This commission presented certain challenges but was a very enjoyable project. I altered the light a little to make a slightly more dramatic scene while trying to suppress some details to provide a softness, like an old homestead.

Midday on the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music

I walked past this building almost every day. I would notice the large rectangular shapes and all to the different tones in the bricks. Breaking up the strong straight lines throughout were the deep shadows and dappled sunlight.
